5 Things You Need to Know About Dressing for Your Body Shape

Body shape – we are obsessed with it.  Either we are too big, too small, not curvy enough not skinny enough or not lump-free enough.  We can spend tons of money getting this nipped and that tucked, but the best solution to fixing our imperfections is not to fix them at all.

No single body is exactly alike and no single perception of your body is alike.  We just have to embrace all our lumps, bumps, curves, and edges and figure out the best way to dress for our shape.

Here are 5 things you need to know about dressing for your body shape:

  1. Accept your body for what it looks like.  If you are short you will never be tall.  Unless plastic surgery IS an option for you, your body shape will not change.  Be realistic when you think about your body.
  2. Everyone has a general body shape, learn yours.  Are you an apple? a pear? an hour glass? a column? an inverted triangle? or an oval?
  3. Different cuts of clothes and fabric textures fall on your body in ways that may complement or exaggerate your shape.  Ex. If you are a pear shape, you might wear a top with a ruffled chest or sleeve to add depth to your narrow shoulders and petite bust.  You might do the same as a column to give the appearance of a bust.  But if you are an inverted triangle, all those ruffles are going to do is make your shoulders look BIGGER!
  4. Use colour to help create a balanced shape.  Ex. Use monochromatic colours if you are round or full bodied in the middle as this helps keep a clean line from head to toe.  If you are an inverted triangle wear a lighter pant with texture or a print to draw the eye away from the broad shoulders and wear a dark coloured top.
  5. Just because its on trend or in fashion doesn’t mean it will flatter your figure.  Ex. If you are pear shaped you likely cannot wear any skirt above the knee so mini’s just won’t work for you no matter how good they look on the model or mannequin.

Remember these the next time you are standing in front of the mirror, contemplating the size of your waist or the length of your torso.  Ask yourself, “What can I do to create the illusion of a balanced figure?”

Not sure what shape you are or what cut of clothing might solve your unbalanced figure?  Leave a comment and I’ll help you figure it out!  Also, keep your eyes peeled for a more detailed look at the different body shapes and smart tips and tricks on dressing them in upcoming posts.

Luscious Lashes

Have you always wanted lusciously long lashes? If you’re like me then you’ve tried every trick out there to achieve the luscious look without any real results.

The first time I tried eyes lash extensions I thought I would never go back to living without them. They looked STUNNING and literally stopped people in their tracks to ogle and stare.

The only problem was that I kept losing my own lashes so that when I removed the extensions my lashes were very sparse.

November 2015 Lashes

Then I decided to try a growth serum but I wasn’t quite ready to spend $125+ on Latisse so I did much research and decided to try Careprost – the generic Latisse which costs 1/3 the price.  So I purchased two bottles online and started applying with an eyeliner brush once a day in November 2015

Now my lashes are full, long and beautiful.  The only side effect is that my eyelids have darkened in colour. I am so pleased with the results!

Shoes, shoes and sneakers?

I have a slight love affair with shoes, so I am always window shopping the new styles of the season.   I noticed on my recent shop that 70’s trends are back with a vengeance in shoes, particularly with sneakers.  Ladies if you want some height in your sneakers, do away with the wedge – the new look is a platform sneaker.

Capezio at the Eaton’s Centre has a selection of sneakers in a satin like fabric in camel and navy. They are quite lovely with a good inch platform.  I like the platform sneaker look much better than the wedge.  I think it matches the shape and image of a sneaker much better.

I found these cuties at Zara.  I think you can really achieve a diversity of looks with the silver theme.  Dark high waisted jeans with a v neck crop top!

Facial products I live by

At my age, I’ve started worrying about wrinkles, skin elasticity and the like.  Just over a year ago I found a product I’m in love with so I thought I’d share it with you.

Vivierskin is a Canadian skin care line and I use two of their products.  The vitamin C scrub is amazing and cleans and scrubs my skin thoroughly but gently.

Vivierskin Vitamin C Scrub

I follow this scrub with a rosewater toner by Burt’s Bees and end with Viver’s C E Peptides which is a medical grade vitamin C and E serum that has completely transformed my skin.  My skin looks dewy and youthful and I don’t find the need to wear any foundation.  My skin is so happy!

All about gel nails

I don’t know about you but there’s nothing more feminine than a beautifully manicured hand. That’s why I get gel manicures on a regular basis.  I go to the same salon each time because they use bio seaweed gel which is free from the dangerous chemicals found in shellac and other gels.  This ensures my nails don’t turn yellow or weaken over time.  In addition, this salon uses builder gel to help keep the nail strong and grow healthy.

Nails on Yonge is at Gerrard and Jarvis.  It’s nothing fancy but Emily does amazing nails!  Where do you go?  What is your favourite nail shape?  Show me your favourite gel nail looks!

The “how to” guide of mixing and matching colour

Most people are attracted to a specific group of colours and for good reason, they typically look great on us. This is the first key to mixing and matching, colour.

My favorite colours are red, hot pink, emerald green, navy blue, grey, mushroom and black.

In my colour mix I have 4 staple colours that are easily matched with other colours; grey, mushroom, navy and black.

The great thing about the other colours in this palette is that they are also easily matched with each other, so that I can make many different combinations of two, three and four colours.

Not everyone has as versatile palette but I hope you see my point, which is to use colour as a guide when shopping. Buy variations in print, cut and style of your favorite colours and neutrals and make sure you also thread these colours into your accessories. You’ll find it much easier to mix and match outfits this way.

Share examples of your new mix n’ match outfits. Or ask me questions about your colours and pieces. You can email me at info@stylesmartsensei.com and I will feature your photos, questions and answers in an upcoming blog.

Happy sharing and commenting!

5 tips to 5 minute makeup

Do you skip the makeup routine altogether because it takes too much time?  Or does it take forever to do your makeup in the mornings and you want to cut down?

As a makeup artist I love doing makeup, but sometimes I just don’t have the time.  Here are 5 tips to 5 minute makeup that will make sure your face looks as put together as your outfit!

1.  Use a tinted moisturizer or moisturizing foundation. This will provide coverage and moisture without having to go through the primer and concealer stages. (1 minute)

2.  Instead of an eye liner or pencil use a shadow  and an broad angled brush to swipe on colour along the lashes. It will go on like liner but in a dusty way so you don’t have to worry about a perfect line. (1 minute)

3.  You can use a clear or tinted mascara to shape your brows.  The applicator does all the work for you. (45 seconds)

4.  Apply mascara to the bottom lashes first so that you don’t transfer mascara to the top lid, avoiding cleanup time. Or use a clear mascara to avoid transfer altogether. (1 minute)

5. Rouge the cheeks for some colour and contour and you’re done! (30 seconds)
